Wide losses for ex-Circuit City suitor Blockbuster

Former Circuit City Stores Inc. suitor Blockbuster Inc. today reported a wider second-quarter loss after an asset sale bolstered year-earlier results.
The net loss was $41.9 million, or 23 cents a share, compared with a loss of $31.4 million, or 18 cents, a year earlier, Dallas-based Blockbuster said in a statement on its Web site today.
Blockbuster, the largest movie-rental chain, last month abandoned a nearly $1.3 billion bid to acquire Circuit City after reviewing the Henrico County-based consumer electronic retailer's finances.
