Three men died in separate crashes on state roads this week, Virginia State Police report.
James R. Shifflett Jr., 45, was traveling on U.S. 340, just south of state Route 754, when he was struck by a car that crossed into his lane at 6:47 a.m. He died at the scene, police said. He was wearing a seat belt, police said.
Christopher Alan Maiden, 23, was south on state Route 626, just south of state Route 612, when he hit a fence at 6 p.m., police said. He died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, police said.
Freddy Pineda, 21, was a passenger in a car that was traveling east on Interstate 64 near state Route 143, when it went off the road and struck a tree at 7:52 a.m., police said. He died at VCU Medical Center at 12:50 p.m. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
The three deaths bring to 492 the number of people who have been killed on the state's highways this year. At the same time last year, 597 had died, state police said.
