A 46-year-old Chesterfield County man was killed Wednesday night when his motorcycle was struck from behind by a sport-utility vehicle on West Broad Street in the Short Pump area, Henrico County police said.

Police identified the motorcyclist as William J. Horner of the 1900 block of Hickstead Road.

Both vehicles were traveling west when the crash occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of West Broad and Old Sadler Road, just east of the Interstate 64 exit, Lt. Rick Schurz said.

The driver of the SUV, a 42-year-old Midlothian woman, was not injured, Schurz said.

Henrico police Lt. Doug Perry said yesterday morning that no charges have been filed, but police are still investigating.

Perry said alcohol wasn't a factor with the woman who was driving the SUV. An autopsy will determine if Horner had any alcohol in his system at the time of the crash, he said.

The fatality brought the state's highway 2008 death toll to 479, compared with 582 at the same time last year.
