Rising University of Richmond junior center Dan Geriot will almost certainly miss the 2008-09 season because of a knee injury suffered earlier this month in a Philadelphia summer-league game, basketball coach Chris Mooney said today.
Mooney earlier this week said that the 6-9 Geriot, who led last season's Spiders in scoring (14.3 points) and rebounding (5.5), would accompany Richmond on its August playing tour of Spain. But he will not play because of what's believed to be a torn ligament in his right knee. He will, it's believed, require surgery.
Geriot sprained a ligament in his left knee during workouts following UR's 2007-08 season. Mooney suggested Friday morning that he was hesitant to speak about Geriot's status early this week until Geriot was examined by UR's team physician. That won't happen for a few days, but Mooney indicated Friday he felt he needed to clarify Geriot's situation, and Mooney is not optimistic about the injury.
The loss of Geriot would be a huge blow to the 2008-09 Spiders, who would have been projected to be among the Atlantic 10 Conference's best teams with him.
