Doug Godsey picked up his first career Southside Speedway victory tonight, leading from green flag to checkered flag in the first of three 30-lap Late Model races.

Roy Hendrick was the winner in the second and third 30-lappers

In the first race, Godsey started first after the fastest seven cars were inverted following time trials. He avoided trouble as those behind him ran into problems.

"We've been the guy in the melee all year," Godsey said afterward. "It was good to be up front and lead flag-to-flag for once."

On lap 10, Hendrick was running second to Godsey on the backstretch when the two cars made contact and Hendrick spun out. Two laps later, a four-car pileup took out the secondthrough fifth-place cars and left Godsey with a clear path to victory.

First-race top five:

1. Doug Godsey; 2. Chris Dodson; 3. Russ Ellis; 4. Brad Davis; 5. Roy Hendrick.

In the second 30-lapper, Hendrick picked up his second victory of the season after a helpful call following a lap-21 incident.

Hendrick was fourth in line behind leader Brad Davis, Russ Ellis and Godsey going into turn three.

Davis, Ellis and Godsey locked up and left Hendrick nowhere to go.

Godsey spun out after contact with Hendrick. Hendrick said later he expected to be sent to the rear of the field for being involved in the incident. However, race officials determined that he would retain his third-place spot.

Three laps later, Ellis spun Davis and Hendrick assumed the lead.

Hendrick held off teammates Chris Dodson and Shayne Lockhart for the win.

Second-race top five:

1 Roy Hendrick; 2. Chris Dodson; 3. Shayne Lockhart; 4. Greg Fernandez; 5. Rob Jenkins.

Hendrick won the third 30-lapper, making this his first multiple-victory night at Southside in what he estimated to be at least a decade.

He battled his son, Brandon Hendrick, along with Lockhart for several laps before he took the lead for good.

"I wanted Brandon to win that so bad," Roy Hendrick said.

Instead, Roy Hendrick reminded longtime fans of his glory years — 1989 to 1991 — when he won three of his four track championships.

He and Lockhart passed Brandon Hendrick after a battle, and Roy Hendrick took the lead from Lockhart with seven laps remaining.

Third race top five:

1. Roy Hendrick; 2. Shayne Lockhart; 3. Brandon Hendrick; 4 Chris Dodson; 5. Greg Fernandez.

In the night’s 30-lap Grand Stock event, Mark Simpson crossed the finish line first, but after a two-hour post-race inspection, Simpson and third-place finisher Jamie Neely were disqualified for illegal engine parts, according to track officials.

Chris Hott, who had crossed the finish line behind Simpson, was declared the race winner.
