State Police effort nets 104 tickets on 288

No crashes were reported along the 7-mile stretch of state Route 288 between the James River and Interstate 64 during the two-day enforcement effort by Virginia State Police motorcycle troopers this week.

The stretch of road in Goochland County was selected for the "saturation" patrols Tuesday and Wednesday as part of a "traffic fatality reduction measure initiative."

Troopers issued 104 summonses for traffic violations; 13 drivers were cited for speeding and reckless driving, and eight safety-belt and child-restraint tickets were written. Troopers also issued 33 summonses for violations related to vehicle equipment.

"Although Virginia State Troopers observed fewer speeding violations during this particular initiative, the number of equipment violations should not be underestimated," said Capt. Steven L. Chumley, division commander for the central Virginia region of the Virginia BREAKING

"Failure to comply with Virginia's traffic laws and inspection program could have tragic consequences on Virginia's roadways."

The goal of the initiative was to encourage and promote safe driving and to reduce fatalities through compliance with Virginia's traffic laws with increased visibility of troopers and their stringent enforcement efforts.
