A 20-year-old Henrico County man was fatally shot Thursday night while apparently mishandling a shotgun with some friends in a home off Williamsburg Road in eastern Henrico, police said.

Todd Allen Avery III, 20, was found mortally wounded about 8:50 p.m. in the living room of a home on Chapman Lane, which authorities said is behind Bubba's Restaurant on Williamsburg Road. It was unclear whether Avery lived at that address.

Witnesses interviewed by police all indicated that Avery and his friends had been handling the gun when it accidentally went off, said Henrico police Lt. Clarence Hunter. The incident remains under investigation.
