The Richmond school system's capital-improvements budget for 2008-2012 includes the following costs for installing elevators needed for the buildings to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Aisha Shamburger, the system's handicap-accessibility coordinator, said they were based on an architect's review of the buildings, but some critics question whether the costs are too high.
$2,016,000 Adult Career Development
Center (two elevators)
$1,612,800 Ginter Park Elementary
$1,108,800 Stuart Elementary
$1,108,800 Swansboro Elementary
$1,075,200 Open High School
$940,800 Bellevue Elementary School
$693,000 Broad Rock Elementary
$693,000 Summer Hill Elementary
$520,800 Martin Luther King Jr.
Middle School
$207,900 Oak Grove Elementary

Note: William Fox Elementary and Richmond Community High schools are also scheduled for elevators, but estimates for those projects include other items.
