Police were led on a chase in South Richmond this morning that ended with the suspect running away after he rammed a cruiser and crashed through a gate at George Wythe High School.

No injuries were reported.

Police were searching for the suspect in an area near the Somerset Glen Apartments, just northwest of George Wythe, after the chase ended about 6:20 a.m.

The suspect was described as a black male, either in his teens or early 20s, weighing 150-160 pounds with close-cropped hair and wearing shorts and a white T-shirt.

Police said that after the suspect stole a truck from a home on Joplin Avenue, officers spotted him and pursued him on a chase that began about 6:13 a.m. and covered parts of Broad Rock Road, Belt Boulevard, Midlothian Turnpike, East 35th Street, East 37th Street and a number of smaller streets.

At one point, the suspect stopped and backed into a pursuing police cruiser, and he also crashed through a gate at George Wythe, police said.

Neither the cruiser nor the truck was seriously damaged, police said.
