Corporate attorney Robert J. Grey Jr. has entered Richmond's race for mayor.

Grey, a partner with Hunton & Williams law firm, filed petitions and other papers late yesterday to qualify for the Nov. 4 ballot, according to the city's Office of the General Registrar.

Grey, 57, has considered running for mayor since Mayor L. Douglas Wilder announced three weeks ago that he would not seek re-election.

Grey, who is close to Wilder, adds a third major candidate in the race with Dwight Clinton Jones, a Richmond delegate, and William J. Pantele, president of Richmond City Council.

Others who have filed or announced plans to run for mayor are businessman Rodney D.C. Barnes, South Richmond resident Donnie Corker, former Wilder aide Paul Goldman, former City Council member L. Shirley Harvey and architect Lawrence E. Williams Sr. Former City Council member Jackie Jackson also has filed papers to run but said she's withdrawing.

The deadline to file is Tuesday.
