16-year-old killed in wreck in Albemarle

A Charlottesville teenager died yesterday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Albemarle County, Virginia State Police said.

Sydney Nichol Aichs, 16, died shortly after 7 a.m., when the driver's side of her car was struck by a tractor-trailer that ran a red light at North Seminole Trail and Ashwood Boulevard, police said.

She had been wearing her seat belt, authorities said.

State police also reported two deaths as a result of separate car wrecks.

Phyllis E. Pollard of Phenix died shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday in Charlotte County.

Pollard, 57, died when her bus struck a tree on state Route 40 east of Route 649, state police said.

She was wearing a seat belt, police said.

James D. Coates of Rippon, W.Va., died shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Loudoun County, according to state police.

Coates, 49, died after he was ejected from his truck on state Route 7, 1½ miles west of Route 1330.

He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
