Seniors across the country have been anxiously awaiting word from their colleges of choice. At Appomattox Regional Governor's School, it is no different. Approximately 98% of this year's graduates are making preparations to attend a four-year institution this fall, while others have plans to attend a local community college or to spend a year pursuing endeavors of their own design.

Especially exciting is the fact that three Governor's school seniors have been accepted into three separate Ivy League schools. The students Amber Garcia, Anna Funtelar and Stephanie Spence have received acceptance letters from Cornell, Brown and Harvard, respectively.

"I'd always hoped, but never expected, that I'd be accepted to an Ivy League school." said Anna. "Needless to say, my parents were excited for me as well."

Amber wasn't supposed to hear from Cornell until April 1st. "When I received a thin 4x9 inch envelope several weeks before, I was sure I didn't get in. Acceptance letters come in thick envelopes, denials in thin! I opened the letter, read the first line, and was completely blown away!" In addition, Amber has been accepted as a Hunter R. Rawlings II Cornell Presidential Research Scholar, a title that comes with an $8,000 grant to use for research that she develops with professors over her four years at Cornell.

Stephanie's first reaction to her acceptance to Harvard was "NO WAY!" Although initially shocked, she now focuses on the honor of being chosen to attend this prestigious university. "I am super excited because I will be around so many intelligent people who I feel will help me grow intellectually as well." Spence has been awarded a full scholarship to Harvard, including personal expenses, room/board, and tuition.

Appomattox Regional Governor's School faculty and staff members are very proud of the accomplishments of the class of '08. Executive Director of the school, Dr. James L. Ruffa, was quick to note, "This Governor's School has achieved a very fine reputation for producing graduates who have been successful at a number of our nation's finest institutions of higher learning, such as Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, Berklee College of Music, and Savannah College of Art and Design.

"Even though ARGS is well known for its performing arts and technology programs, the core academic program is quite rigorous. These very talented students are also extremely capable scholars. I am so proud of the accomplishments of this year's senior class."
