The National Weather Service reports strong thunderstorms moving through central and southcentral Virginia.

Strong thunderstorms are reported from Mechanicsville to 15 miles west of McKenney.  Wind gusts to 50 mph and frequent cloud to ground lightning are possible.  The National Weather Service cautions that if you hear thunder, you are close enought to be struck by lightning.  Move into a safe shelter and remain indoors until the storms have passed.

Rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour will cause ponding of water on roadways and possible localized flooding in low lying and flood prone areas.

The National Weather Service has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for northern Chesterfield County in Central Virginia, including Bon Air, Richmond, downtown Richmond, southeastern Goochland and Hanover Country.

A tornado watch is also in effect until 9 a.m. for Central Virginia, including the metro Richmond area.

A storm is crossing Northern Virginia, bringing heavy rain and frequent lightning.  The area remains under risk of severe thunderstorms until late morning.
