A waterfront property in Stafford County known as Crow's Nest is the newest land in Virginia Natural Area Preserves.
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine joined local officials Thursday to celebrate the acquisition of 1,770 acres. It is believed to be one of the largest and most significant natural areas remaining on the East Coast.
The Crow's Nest peninsula is between Potomac and Accokeek creeks. Its hardwood forests, shorelines and deep ravines are home to numerous rare species and significant natural communities.
In December, the Stafford Board of Supervisors voted to purchase 1,770 acres of the property and put a two-year option on an additional 1,100 acres.
The $19 million acquisition brings the total acreage in the Virginia Natural Area Preserves system to more than 45,000 acres.
