Four people have died in crashes on Virginia roads since Thursday, Virginia State Police said.
A 26-year-old North Carolina man died Saturday in Virginia Beach after a car he was driving ran off Blackwater Road just north of Shirley Lane and overturned, state police said. Joseph Handy Hearn of Knotts Island, N.C., died at the scene of the 6 a.m. crash. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
On Friday, a Ferrum man died after wrecking a sport utility vehicle about 6:35 p.m. along Route 602 in Franklin County, state police said. Roosevelt Junior Chaney, 51, died at the scene after the SUV ran off the road, hit some trees and overturned, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
On Thursday, an 86-year-old man died in a two-vehicle crash in Rockbridge County. Allan L. Smith of Sanford, Maine, was eastbound on U.S. 60 when the car turned sideways and collided with an eastbound vehicle. Smith was wearing a seat belt, police said.
A 20-year-old woman died Thursday at the scene of a wreck in Norfolk. Chasity C. Anderson of Troy, Mich., was westbound on Interstate 64 when the car she was in crossed a grass median and collided with an eastbound vehicle. Anderson was wearing a seat belt, police said.
The deaths bring to 241 the number of traffic fatalities this year. Last year at this time, there had been 281 traffic deaths.
