A Richmond psychotherapist, a family of volunteer firefighters from Hanover County, a foster grandparent program in Petersburg and an Atlee High School junior were honored today by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine for volunteering in their communities.

Kaine announced 12 winners of his annual Volunteerism and Community Service Awards, including:

  • Hilda W. Woodby, who led the effort to open Family Advocacy Clinics Inc. in Richmond to provide low-cost psychotherapy to people experiencing family violence;
  • the Long family of Mechanicsville, whose three generations helped establish and operate the Eastern Hanover Volunteer Fire Company;
  • Petersburg Foster Grandparents Inc., which mentors children in public schools, child-care centers, juvenile detention centers and homeless shelters; and
  • Kaitlin Gastrock, an Atlee junior from Mechanicsville who tutors children to help them read.

    The people and organizations honored will receive their awards April 24 during a conference on volunteerism and community service in Virginia Beach. The three-day conference will usher in Volunteer Week, which Kaine has designated for April 27 through May 3.
