Recent sniper and highway shooting incidents

  • April 29, 2007: Multiple rounds fired into a northbound car on Interstate 95 between Maury and Broad streets, injuring one of two occupants.
  • July 2005: Interstate 64 shooting from one vehicle into another as a result of an incident in Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. No one injured.
  • February 2004: Shot from unknown location fired into charter bus traveling on I-64 in eastern Henrico County. No one injured.
  • December 2003: Two Virginia state troopers working beside a disabled tractor-trailer on I-95 near Boulevard exit come under fire from passing car. No one injured.
  • February 2003: 5-year-old Rachel Sanchez left blind, with speech problems, after being shot in head as she rode in back seat of a car on Interstate 40 in Conover, N.C. A 15-year old boy later admits he fired toward the highway while target practicing.
  • October 2002: Ten people killed and three wounded in sniper shootings that terrorize communities in the I-95 corridor of Maryland, the Dis trict of Columbia and Virginia. For their roles in the shootings, John Allen Muhammad received the death sentence and Lee Boyd Malvo is serving life.
  • May 2000: Stafford County woman driving south on I-95 says man following her in van fires a shot at right tire. Nothing is struck.
  • August 1999: Sara Anne Bruehl, 18, is killed after a man opens fire on her vehicle on I-64 in New Kent County
  • December 1998: Motorist on I-64 shot in road-rage incident.
  • June 1998: Shots fired into Pennsylvania couple's motor home on ramp leading from I-64 onto Interstate 295 near Sandston. Vehicle struck, no one injured in road rage incident.
  • June 25-29, 1996: Window of northbound van struck by gunfire on I-295 in Hanover County as it cleared Meadowbridge Road overpass. No one injured. Eleven other vehicles hit with gunfire earlier in the week in Richmond, six on I-95 and five on other interstates.
