New program nets 24 drug arrests in Petersburg

PETERSBURG -- Federal, state and Petersburg law enforcement officials this afternoon announced the arrests of 24 drug offenders and other criminals in "Operation IMPACT 2."

In all, 38 people have been indicted this year on -- among other things -- 23 counts of distribution of cocaine, 14 counts of selling cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, six counts of possession of cocaine and 22 firearms charges.

The effort involved Petersburg police, the Peterburg and Dinwiddie County sheriff's offices, the DEA, the BATF, the U.S. Marshal Service, the Virginia Attorney General's office, U.S. Attorney's Office and the Petersburg Commonwealth's Attorney.

The first Operation IMPACT took place from August through October 2007 resulting in the indictment of 54 people, 53 of whom have been arrested.
