PICK OF THE WEEK

STAUNTON Keeping warm will not be a problem at the sixth annual Virginia Hot Glass Festival next weekend. Fifty top glass artists from the eastern United States will gather in Staunton to blow, cast, fuse and slump 2,000-degree molten glass into colorful, flowing, individual pieces of art and jewelry.

"Artists will be working in their festival studios throughout the weekend," says Doug Sheridan, glass-artist owner of Sunspots, the Staunton studio that hosts the event.

"As well as different artists, there are also many different glass techniques and types of glass art to see."

All of the artists will be selling their work.

In addition during the weekend:

  • The nationally acclaimed American Shakespeare Center will be performing "The Merchant of Venice," "Henry V" and "The Taming of the Shrew."
  • The historic Stonewall Jackson Hotel & Conference Center, a short walk from Sunspots Studios, will be the host hotel offering special rates and a Hot Glass Festival package.
  • Staunton restaurants will have special Hot Glass Festival menus.
  • Historian Marney Gibbs will host special walking and trolley tours of historic Staunton that will include the Tiffany glass windows in Trinity Episcopal Church and the Charles Connick glass windows in the Temple House of Israel synagogue.
  • Visit www.sunspots.com/VA_Hot_Glass_Fest.htm for more information. Admission and parking are free.

Staunton is 90 minutes from Richmond via Interstate 64.
