Defending state rooster crow champion Emmett Gover danced his way into this year's finals at the State Fair of Va. by doing about every goofy thing he could muster in the three minutes of the preliminary round.
Jojo Kruger is living out a childhood dream. "I should be paying to see America, but instead I'm getting paid to do it," marveled the South African, who is working as a games operator and stock-control manager on the midway at the State Fair of Virginia.
Mary DelPopolo's 1,007-pound pumpkin didn't shatter the state fair record of 1,138 pounds, but it still took 16 neighbors to get the giant gourd into a van.
It was a fantastic day to be a duck. Just ask Robert Duck. The showman runs the Great American Duck Race of New Mexico, one of three new shows at the State Fair of Virginia.
The fair opens Thursday and runs through Oct. 5 at the Richmond Raceway Complex on Laburnum Avenue, the last year it will be in Henrico. Next year, the fair moves to Caroline to create new memories.
After this year, fairgoers can trade traffic jams on Laburnum Avenue for the traffic on Interstate 95. The State Fair of Virginia will move to Caroline County in 2009.
