Penny Woodford's father was an Army pilot stationed in Germany when she was a child. As a result, she traveled extensively with her family across Europe.
Easter 1958 found them in a small hotel in Amsterdam. Her father went to the desk to inquire about a nearby restaurant for breakfast for his wife and two young daughters. All were closed for Easter, he was told.
"The owner sent Dad back upstairs and said he would bring us something," recalled Woodford, who lives in Chesterfield County. "In a little while, the owner and his wife appeared with trays of boiled eggs, several kinds of thick, sliced bread, cheeses, cold cuts and pots of dark, sweet hot tea. Ambrosia!"
To this day, Woodford's family has celebrated Easter with the same breakfast, all the while fondly remembering the kindness of the hotel owners.
