PORTSMOUTH -- Portsmouth police said an officer shot and killed an Ohio man who lunged at the officer with a knife.

Police spokeswoman Ann Hope said 29-year-old Christopher Bacome of Toledo, Ohio was killed last night after officers responded to a call from an out-of-state family member who said he was suicidal.

When officers arrived at an apartment, a witness told them Bacome had locked himself inside a bathroom and that there was a lot of blood on the floor. When Bacome came out of the bathroom with a knife, an officer directed him to put it down but he lunged at the officer, who shot Bacome.

The officer's name has not been released. The incident remains under investigation.
