In hopes of ringing in the new year in a warmer climate, Ford Scott of Henrico County headed south to Charleston, S.C., this year. The weather didn't cooperate.
"The wind and cold followed me, but I did enjoy my time there, including a visit to the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, where I took this picture," Scott wrote in a note submitted with the photo, which he calls "Which End Up?"
The plantation, founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, reportedly has the oldest public gardens in America, opening to visitors in 1872. Scott focused his camera on this section of the grounds near Schoolhouse Pond during a walk one early afternoon.
So what's with the slant?
"It looked like a very interesting scene, . . . and the only way to get the top part in was to take it on an angle like this," he said.
