Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Mark Chance of Lincolnton, N.C., are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Sarah Emma Chance, to Mr. John Hastings Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Warren Thompson of Richmond.

Miss Chance is the granddaughter of Mrs. Carole B. Schweitz of Lincolnton, N.C., and the late Mr. Oscar Schweitz. Mr. Thompson is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Edgar Thompson of Richmond, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Barrow Hastings of Clarksville.

The bride-to-be is a graduate of Appalachian State University and the groom-to-be is a graduate of Davidson College. They are both graduates of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University. She is currently an Assistant Public Defender in Fayetteville, N.C., and he is currently an Assistant District Attorney in Raeford, N.C.

An October 2008 wedding is planned.
