Heeding a tornado warning she saw on TV last night, Debbie Rooney of Stafford County went upstairs to wake her 14-year-old daughter, Kaitlyn, and rush her downstairs to the basement.
Moments later, about 10:55 p.m., a tornado knocked the windows out of her house. She later found a large plate of glass on her daughter's pillow.
If the girl hadn't moved, Rooney said, "I think she would have been decapitated."
The National Weather Service said this afternoon the tornado produced 111-to-135 mph winds.
Dozens of homes were damaged just north of Fredericksburg, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries.
Weather Service officials also said a tornado struck Henry and Franklin counties south of Roanoke.
It damaged four homes, but no one was reported injured, said Weather Service meteorologist Phillip Manuel.
That tornado, producing 86-to-95 mph winds, struck yesterday about 8 p.m. It traveled about a mile and had a maximum width of 75 yards.
The twisters were spawned by thunderstorms that moved northeast across much of Virginia yesterday evening and this morning.
No major problems were immediately reported in the Richmond area.
Early estimates indicated most of central Virginia got 1 to 5 inches of rain, possibly more in places.
