Holly Kiser, who grew up in Coeburn, is television's latest supermodel-in-the-making.
Kiser, 21, beat out 13 other finalists Thursday to win Bravo TV's first season of "Make Me a Supermodel." Her winnings include $100,000 and a one-year modeling contract.
Tomorrow, she'll appear at 4 p.m. on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on CBS.
Her father, Joe Kiser, said yesterday his daughter was flying to Los Angeles to tape the show. Speaking by phone from Dickinson County, he said she also plans to take some time off before returning to New York.
"She's been so busy doing interviews, we haven't had time to talk to her at all," said Joe Kiser. "Maybe 10 minutes."
His daughter did a little modeling in Johnson City, Tenn., he said, before moving to Miami to work and, subsequently, to audition for "Make Me a Supermodel."
As for what she modeled on the show, Kiser said, laughing, "I'd never seen anything like that before. I asked my wife who wears that kind of stuff.
"She said nobody! She said that's 'high fashion.'"
In her diary at bravotv.com, Kiser wrote, "I really want to be an example for those who have dreams despite whatever opportunities they feel they don't have. I came from the hills of Appalachia and look at where I am right now.
"I never took no for an answer. . . . I promise I won't let you down. Mom, Dad and Ray. . . . Thank you so much for believing in me, I did it guys, I did it.
"I'M A SUPERMODEL."
It's the last of the Virginians on 'Survivor: Micronesia'
Thank the NCAA tournament games if you missed "Survivor" the last couple of weeks.
If your TiVo was set to record the reality show March 20, then you also missed seeing another Virginian leave the island.
Tracy Hughes-Wolf of Fredericksburg was the ninth person to exit "Survivor: Micronesia." That show did air locally -- but a day earlier than usual.
In a post-show interview, Hughes-Wolf, 43, told realitytvworld.com she knew the end was near.
"I was completely aware," she said. "I even told Jeff [Probst, the show's host] -- it was edited out -- but I said, "Jeff, I'm going home tonight.'"
"Jeff said, 'You don't know that, a lot happens at the last minute.' I said, 'You know what? You're right. I should be more positive.'"
She said she'd do the show again in a heartbeat.
A commercial and residential builder, Hughes-Wolf and her husband have two daughters. She attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro, N.C., and Virginia Commonwealth University.
In a surprise move, one of Hughes-Wolf's teammates, Kathy Sleckman of Glen Ellyn, Ill., quit the competition the same night Hughes-Wolf was voted off.
Jonny Fairplay of Danville (formerly known as Jon Dalton) was voted off the island in the Feb. 7 season premiere. Both he and Hughes-Wolf are scheduled to appear on "Survivor's" May 11 finale.
