Here on the rooftop of Virginia, the wind blows in hard from the northwest. It rarely ceases. To the southeast is Big Pinnacle, at 5,089 feet the highest point in Grayson Highlands State Park. To the northwest is Wilburn Ridge, the Appalachian Trail and, if we want to venture outside the park, Mount Rogers, Virginia's highest peak (5,729 feet).

Richmond police chief Rodney Monroe arrives outside the Boatwright Memorial Library on the University of Richmond campus on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, where authorities were working after two sightings of a possible gunman on campus.
The University of Richmond planned to reopen this morning under heightened security after school authorities locked down the campus yesterday in response to a suspicious, possibly armed man.

It would have been safe to say I was living under a rock when it comes to my knowledge of NASCAR. Sure, I knew it existed. I grew up hearing the roar of engines from the television screen, and some of my little brother's first words were: "Put 'em in the wall!" Other than that, I knew nothing.

"This is my other life," said a smiling Greenberg, among 450 artists and craftsmen at Arts in the Park, now in its 37th year at Byrd Park. The two-day show, which attracts an estimated 80,000 people, concludes today.

As the cost of oil is setting records again, schools are taking a different approach to their buildings. The trend now is to build "green" schools that are environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, which leads to lower costs in the long run.

Michelle Greenidge (with poster board) talks with children in the child-care training room at ChildSavers yesterday during the center's grand re-opening activities. Greenidge is director of the Downtown YMCA Child Care Center.
A different kind of signal is beaming from the old WRVA radio studios on Church Hill. ChildSavers, a nonprofit organization that's served the developmental and mental-health needs of children in the Richmond area for more than 80 years, has moved into the historic radio station following more than a year of major renovations.

Kyle Busch was loving every minute. Denny Hamlin was long gone. Busch took over victory lane yesterday after the Denny Hamlin 175, celebrating a race he had about 12 hours to figure out.
