There are diners, and then there's the Silver Diner.
A staple in Northern Virginia and Maryland, the trademark cylinder-shaped restaurant will make its Richmond debut in mid-October at the corner of Cox Road and Broad Street in western Henrico County.
The extensive menus (check them out at silverdiner.com) feature expected diner fare such as all-day breakfast (creamed chipped beef, caramel French toast, steak and eggs), lunch and dinner (stacked burgers, grilled cheese, pot roast, chicken fried steak), hand-dipped milkshakes and daily blue plate specials.
But, in keeping with the trend to offer healthier options, customers can also order a healthy shake with fat-free ice cream, herb-grilled chicken breast, an array of salads and other foods lower in fat and cholesterol.
The building is expected to be completed by early September. But Mark Russell, director of new store development, said the company likes to train its new employees for four to five weeks before opening.
Hiring begins in September for about 100 employees.

If you've wondered about the mystery building being constructed behind Chili's at Short Pump Town Center, it's a drive-through Starbucks.
Look for it to open around August.

R.I.P.: Table Talk was devastated to learn last week that The Corner, the small, homey joint at 1301 W. Leigh St., has closed.
A construction worker inside the vacated building was refurbishing a bar for the next inhabitants, but didn't know if owner Herman "Big Herm" Baskerville and his delectable corn bread recipe had relocated elsewhere.
