A memorial service for Dr. Murry N. DePillars will be held Saturday at noon at the Allix B. James Chapel, 1500 N. Lombardy St., on the campus of Virginia Union University in Richmond.

Dr. DePillars, who retired in 1995 after 19 years as dean of Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts, died May 31 at his Richmond home after a period of declining health. He was 69.

The Chicago native became dean of the arts school in 1976. Under his guidance, the program grew into one of the largest such programs in the country.

An advocate of jazz music and a prolific artist, Dr. DePillars joined VCU in 1971 as assistant dean of the university's art program.

A second memorial service will be held June 28 at 11 a.m. at the ETA Creative Arts Foundation's ETA Theater, 7558 S. South Chicago Ave. in Chicago.
