Eastville Inn

Just a few miles off U.S. 13, the restaurant occupies a restored 18th-century inn in the town of Eastville. The menu includes local favorites such as crab cakes, oysters and scallops. A recent lunch of a shrimp-and-cucumber appetizer, followed by a fried oyster sandwich, was outstanding. When you're done eating, you can visit one of the town's galleries or stop by the old 18th-century courthouse that contains the oldest continuous county court records (since 1632) in the United States.

Kelly's Gingernut Pub

In the heart of Cape Charles' small but resurgent business district, Kelly's is a popular bar-restaurant in an old bank building. You can dine in the vault. An extensive beer list makes Kelly's a favorite stop for locals and tourists. Owner Gene Kelly is a gregarious former New York bartender who fell in love with the Shore and spent years bringing the once-decrepit building back to life. "Gingernut" is Irish slang for a redhead, of which Kelly's wife, Colleen, is one.

Woody's Beach BBQ

"Check out the guy doing barbecue on the traffic circle" in Chincoteague on the way to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. We're glad we did. Woody's operates out of a concession trailer, a barbecue smoker smoking behind it. Park in the gravel lot under a shade tree. Then belly up to one of the umbrella tables, smile at a Jimmy Buffett tune drifting from a nearby speaker and prepare to enjoy some of the best barbecue that ever passed your lips. Everything's homemade, including the fries and slaw. Larry Parsons runs the place. The staff includes his family, as well as youth from his church.
