Following is a list of special events in the Shenandoah Valley region through December. Events are free unless noted and are subject to change. For more activities and adventures visit www.virginia.org.

  • 42nd Annual Town of Stanley Homecoming, Main Street, Stanley, July 2-5. 6 p.m.-11 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday; 6 p.m. - 12 p.m. Friday and Saturday.   • 12th Annual BB&T Fourth of July Balloon Rally, VMI parade grounds, Lexington, July 3 and 4. 59 p.m., Thursday; 6 a.m.10 p.m. Friday. July 3 features a balloon glow at dusk in addition to children's activities, live music and food vendors. July 4 activities include a classic car show and ends with fireworks at dusk. Free.   • Valley 4th, downtown Harrisonburg, July 4. noon-9:30 p.m. A reading of the Declaration of Independence featuring historical re-enactors begins at noon followed by live music, family and children's activities throughout the day.   • 2008 New Market July Fourth Lawn Party, New Market Community Park, New Market, July 4. 7 a.m.11 p.m. Community events throughout the day including a 5 mile race, yard sale, auction, live music and dancing, games, children's activities and food vendors.   • Brycefest 2008, Bryce Resort, Bayse, July 5. 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Ninth annual festival featuring live music, children's activities, fire-truck rides, vintage car show, food vendors and arts-and-crafts booths.   • Frederick County Fair, Frederick County Fairgrounds, Clear Brook, July 27-Aug. 2, 4-10 p.m. daily except Sunday. Sunday is limited, with a horse show beginning at 9 a.m. and no midway or gate admission. Livestock shows, pageants, petting zoo, live entertainment, rides and concessions.
