Smokie Sizemore likes to talk about something she calls "the Six Habits of Highly Effective Time Wasters."

Bet you went back and read that sentence again. Then maybe you thought about what those habits might be.

That's exactly what Sizemore, an executive coach in Richmond, gets you to do: think about your career, your company, your life. She's one of the brains behind WOW!

WOW! -- short for World of Working Women -- is a daylong conference on April 5 for professional women. It's a chance, as Sizemore said in an interview earlier this week, to shift your thinking: "It's not about settling and surviving," she said. "It's about thriving in your career. And when you thrive in your career, you thrive everywhere else."

In case you're wondering, an executive coach is a life coach who works with executives on career and business issues. Sizemore is also the founder of the Smart Woman's Club, an Internet community of professional women.

The WOW! conference, she said, is another way to connect with other women. "It's an opportunity to come together and support one another. Doing things by yourself is hard."

The speakers at the conference will teach you:

  • How to pick up two hours of time a week.
  • How to be smart with money.
  • How to live longer.
  • How to find balance.
  • How to send the right message with attire before you open your mouth.
  • How to put makeup on in the morning and not have to touch it again.

You get to choose three sessions, but, in a nifty twist, all the speakers will participate in a "power-hour" panel in midafternoon. That means if you go to the smart money presentation and miss the image expert, you can ask her questions, too.

Libby Brown, a founder of both This End Up Furniture and of Fowl Cay Resort and the author of "Making Waves," will speak twice: at breakfast and at the Smart Woman Awards ceremony that wraps up the day.

This is not the typical sit-all-day-and-listen experience. Lunch is a speakerless buffet designed for networking.

"WOW! is all about putting a positive force into what you're doing," Sizemore said. "It's about celebration, because you're smart."
